I love shopping at Goodwill. I especially love their 50% off sales.
A couple of weeks ago at one of these sales, I stumbled upon a plain cork board. The original price was $2.99 ~ so $1.49 after the discount.
I spray painted the frame with black glossy paint – making sure to get both sides and the little edge on the inside also. Note: Spray painting in grass is the best option because any over spray will grow out and be mowed off.
I then used a craft glue stick I picked up at Target for $1.99 that says it allows for repositioning. I applied the glue to one edge of the board, then laid the fabric I wanted over the top and pressed down along that edge to get the fabric to stick. Note: I also got the fabric at Goodwill. It was a king sized flannel sheet ~ $1.99 ~ that I used to reupholster chairs also.
I did this along all edges and some in the middle, being careful to stretch the fabric to remove any wrinkles. Note: The glue works best on the cork that is spray painted. Next time I would spray a spot in the middle also.
After pressing the fabric down firmly on each edge, I cut the excess off as closely as I could get to the edge of the frame – being sure to leave about 1/4 inch excess.
I then used a paint can opener to push the edge of the fabric under the frame edge so that no raw edges are showing. Note: A paint can opener is available at any Home Depot or Lowe’s. I even think Home Depot gives them out for free.
The finished product is a very pretty cork board. However, if you’d like to go a step further you can…
Put small nails (after spray painting them) or pretty tacks into the board and use it as a necklace holder. Once it is hung on the wall you have art and function both!
However, I want to use mine downstairs where the table with the matching chairs resides, so am going to use it as a ping pong paddle holder by fastening on this ping pong carrier (the paddles and balls came in it when I bought them at Target).
Total project cost = $5.50.
- Cork Board ~ $1.49
- Glue ~ $1.99 ~ more than 1/2 the stick still left.
- Fabric ~ $1.99 ~ plus used it to reupholster chairs.
- Paint ~ $0 ~ already had it.
